Language Learning Assistant is a Chrome extension for learning languages while watching YouTube videos. It can display, process, translate, annotate, read aloud, and look up subtitle and vocabulary text.
When used on YouTube, the extension may read and process video information, subtitle and transcript text, text selected or clicked by the user, user settings, saved vocabulary, and dictionary data imported by the user.
This data is primarily processed locally in the users browser. The developer does not operate a server that collects this data.
The extension may store settings, AI provider configuration, API Keys, translation settings, dictionary settings, saved vocabulary, subtitle preferences, dictionary data, and cached data locally in the users browser.
Some general settings may use Chrome sync storage. If Chrome Sync is enabled, Chrome or Google may synchronize that data according to the users Chrome settings.
If the user enables local subtitle caching, subtitle files and related data may also be stored in a local folder selected by the user.
The extension does not send user data to a developer owned server. The current version does not contain developer operated analytics, advertising, telemetry, tracking, or log upload services.
Some optional features communicate with third party services.
The extension may communicate with YouTube and Google services to access subtitle resources and provide translation features.
If the user enables AI features, relevant text, prompts, context, and request data may be sent to the AI provider selected by the user.
Supported AI providers may include OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, DeepSeek, xAI, Meta, and Alibaba Cloud.
If the user enables online dictionary features, queried words or phrases may be sent to the selected dictionary provider.
Supported dictionary services may include Wiktionary, Jisho, Merriam Webster, Korean Basic Dictionary, and Oxford Dictionaries.
The extension may use the browser Web Speech API for text to speech. Speech processing may occur locally or through services provided by the browser or operating system.
Third party services process data according to their own privacy policies and terms.
API Keys entered by the user are stored locally in the users browser.
API Keys are not sent to the developer. They are used only to authenticate requests to the third party service selected by the user.
Users can clear saved API Keys from the extension settings.
The developer does not sell user data.
The extension does not send user data to the developer.
Data is transmitted to third party services only when the user uses features that require those services.
The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Data stored by the extension remains on the users device or in Chrome extension storage until it is deleted by the user or removed through extension management.
Users can clear API Keys, reset settings, delete saved vocabulary, remove imported dictionaries, clear dictionary caches, and delete locally stored subtitle files.
Uninstalling the extension removes extension managed Chrome storage and database data according to Chrome behavior. Files saved in folders selected by the user may remain and can be deleted manually.
Language Learning Assistant is a general purpose language learning tool.
The current V1 release does not require registration and does not intentionally request names, ages, or other personal identity information.
Local features do not require an account or age information.
Third party services may have their own age requirements, privacy policies, and terms. Users of those services must comply with the requirements of the corresponding provider.
This Privacy Policy may be updated when extension features, data handling practices, third party services, or legal requirements change.
The effective date will be updated when this policy changes.
